LACMA Spotlight on Two Historic Artworks

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art was one of the first of the area’s major art institutions to roll out its Pacific Standard Time programming and two of its first three exhibits are single pieces of art, both of which were created in L.A., but are rarely shown locally.

Ed Keinholz’s Five Car Stud and Maria Nordman’s Filmroom: Smoke are both snapshots of late-60s Los Angeles and their simultaneous presentations illustrate a city in transition. Somewhere between the racial tensions of post-industrial urbanism and the disorienting feeling of an incomplete film is a Los Angeles negotiating its own social and cultural issues during the tumultuous Vietnam era.
